Cold War collectibles: Five rare brochures promoting Soviet space dominance
€ 275,00
Five rare brochures promoting the Soviet Union and its space program, published for Expo 1958 in Brussels.
This compelling set of five multilingual brochures (in French, English, and German) was issued by the USSR during the Expo 1958—the first World's Fair held after the Second World War. The Soviet Union seized this international stage to promote its technological prowess, especially in the area of space exploration.
The highlight of the set is Face au cosmos, a richly illustrated brochure celebrating the USSR’s achievements in space. It details the launch of Sputnik 1 (October 1957), the world’s first artificial satellite—a pivotal moment in 20th-century history that ignited the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States.
The brochure also covers Sputnik 2, launched in November 1957, which became the first spacecraft to carry a living being into orbit: Laika, a stray dog from the streets of Moscow. Though Laika tragically died from overheating after the fourth orbit, the mission represented a significant milestone in the development of manned spaceflight.
These brochures are more than ephemeral promotional pieces: they capture a moment when science, politics, and propaganda merged to project Soviet power on the global stage.
