Where Paper Tells The Stories History Forgot

Rare books, ephemera, and manuscripts for curators, collectors, and the curious.

What We Offer

Based in Amersfoort, The Netherlands, we specialize in rare books, manuscripts, and antiquarian ephemera that reveal forgotten chapters of history.

From murder pamphlets and Jewish history to 18th-century broadsides banning homosexuality—you never know what you’ll find.

We don't just sell old paper. We sell stories. Every item in our collection is hand-picked for its historical significance, curiosity, or plain strangeness. It's our mission to bring hidden histories into the hands of those who cherish them. Check out our collection.

New items drop regularly, so join our newsletter to stay ahead of the pack.

Who We Are

We’re Chantal Germaine Haak and Steven de Joode. We founded Black Dog Rare Books in 2018 with a shared passion for history, storytelling, and collecting.

  • Chantal is a psychology‑trained dealer with a keen eye for the unusual (and a bit of dance flair).

  • Steven has an MA in Book & Manuscript Studies; he is a member of the IOBA.

We also love dogs, long walks, and arguing about music (unbelievably, Chantal hates Tom Waits!). Most of all, we love helping you build a collection that matters to you.

Who We Serve
We work with rare book and museum curators, librarians, collectors, and fellow dealers across the globe. Our clients value our well-researched listings, global reach, and passion-driven expertise.

About

John Woremberg, a Switzar / his height two feet seven inches. Aged 38 years to be seen now in London 1688.

Our mission is like being matchmakers for books, except instead of setting up awkward blind dates, we're finding the perfect homes for rare books and manuscripts, connecting people to our shared past.

We've got a taste for the weird and wonderful, so you never know what you'll stumble upon on our website—maybe it's a murder pamphlet, a circus pitch card, or an early-modern work banning homosexuality.

We believe that books are more than just objects: they are stories, ideas, and pieces of the past waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re searching for a forgotten gem, a visually striking document, or an item with an unexpected twist, our collection is thoughtfully chosen to surprise and inspire.

Black Dog Rare Books was founded in Amersfoort, The Netherlands, in December 2018. It is run by Chantal Germaine Haak and Steven de Joode.

Chantal has a background in psychology and previous experience as a broker. She brings a blend of business savvy and a curious mind to the company, along with a keen eye for the unusual. Oh, and occasionally she does a little dance behind her computer.

Steven holds a BA (Hons.) in German and an MA (Hons.) in Book and Manuscript Studies from the University of Amsterdam. He has worked as a bibliographer at the National Library of the Netherlands, as a cataloguer and dealer at Antiquariaat Forum, and a rare books expert at Catawiki.

Steven is a member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA).

Our clients include international libraries, museums, private collectors, and fellow members of the trade; we ship worldwide. We like to keep everyone in the loop with our newsletters, so if you're not already subscribed, be sure to do so and you'll never miss a new arrival again.
