An account of a controversy over the use of cement. Lovely copy in a fine binding from the library of Jan Willem Six van Vromade (1872-1936).

Unico W.T. Cazius was the owner of a cement factory that produced newly invented, patented cement. According to Van Doelen, burgomaster of Utrecht, the cement used by Cazius was of questionable quality, and he refused to use it for public works in 1824, citing the failed renovation of the lock at Vreeswijk as a case in point.

A committee investigated the matter and concluded that the quality of the cement was actually very high, it had, however, been wrongly applied. As a result Van Doelen resigned from office. The present account gives an overview of the controversy, adding several letters as supplements.

Contemporary gold-tooled red morocco, gold-tooled inner dentelles, all edges gilt, lovely pink endpapers. Spine very lightly sunned, otherwise in very good condition.
