A rare first-hand account of the enigmatic medium Eusapia Palladino

Price

This book explores the controversial world of early 20th-century spiritualism through a rare, personal account of the enigmatic Italian medium Eusapia Palladino (1854-1918).

Italian-born Eusapia Palladino captivated and astonished many in the early 20th century. She claimed extraordinary abilities that went beyond mere table levitation; her repertoire included speaking in foreign languages, displaying flashes of light, producing the sounds of unseen musical instruments, communicating with the dead, and causing inexplicable changes in weight.

Palladino's séances quickly propelled her to stardom, but simultaneously attracted fierce criticism. Many scientists considered her a fraud. She underwent numerous scientific tests in Europe and America, during which her trickery was repeatedly exposed. The famous magician Harry Houdini was one of her most outspoken skeptics, viewing her more as a masterful illusionist than a medium.

In 1908, the American parapsychologist Hereward Carrington traveled to Naples on behalf of the Society for Psychical Research to investigate her claims. Interestingly, this book reveals that Carrington himself witnessed Palladino cheating, yet remained convinced that at least some of her phenomena were genuine—a nuanced perspective from a researcher grappling with the inconsistencies he observed. This book is the result of his detailed investigation.

Believing that Palladino could achieve even greater fame, Carrington acted as her manager and brought her to America in 1909, aiming to persuade the most skeptical scientists. Ultimately, this endeavor failed, and Palladino returned to Italy. Despite the public attention and the failed American tour, she continued to perform, seemingly undeterred by the skepticism she faced.

This rare book offers a unique insight into Carrington's personal investigation and the complex interplay of belief, deception, and scientific inquiry surrounding one of the most controversial figures in the history of parapsychology.

A crucial primary source for those fascinated by the history of spiritualism, magic and scientific research.
