Programme for Greyhound and Borzoi races in The Hague, 5 March 1922, unrecorded

Price

€ 225,00

Unrecorded and remarkably early programme for Greyhound and Borzoi races in The Hague, 5 March 1922.

Greyhound racing emerged in the early 1920s in America and England as a thrilling new sport, famous for its fast pace and endless betting opportunities. Unlike horse racing, it quickly gained popularity among the working class.

The "'s-Gravenhaagsche Windhonden-Renclub", founded in 1922, was among the very first Greyhound racing clubs in the Netherlands. Its track at Bezuidenhout 625, just opposite villapark Marlot, hosted the earliest races in January 1922. Contemporary newspaper ads reveal the lively atmosphere: races every Sunday, live music, and prizes that drew large crowds.

The programme lists the names and addresses of all dog owners and features four races: two flat races (one for Greyhounds and one for Borzois) and two hurdle races (again divided between Greyhounds and Borzois).

A rare and important survival of Dutch sporting ephemera, documenting the birth of Greyhound racing in the Netherlands and its place in the cultural history of The Hague.
