George Washington as seen through 19th-century German eyes

Price

€ 375,00

A rare and visually striking portrait of George Washington (1732–1799), Founding Father and the first President of the United States, published as part of the Stuttgarter Bilderbogen series.

This finely hand-coloured print features Washington’s likeness framed by a laurel wreath, surrounded by detailed vignProductsettes illustrating key moments in his life: his early work as a surveyor, his leadership during the Siege of Boston, his presidential inauguration, and his death.

The bottom of the print includes a bilingual (German and English) biographical text, ending with a noteworthy phrase: “after having given his slaves their liberty”—a historical claim reflecting 19th-century European perspectives on Washington’s legacy.

Published by Friedrich G. Schulz between 1840 and 1855, this engraving is part of a celebrated visual storytelling tradition. The Stuttgarter Bilderbogen prints were widely admired for combining education and entertainment through visual history.

This item is of particular interest to institutions or collectors focusing on transatlantic iconography, 19th-century European interpretations of American figures, or the global reception of U.S. history.
