Unrecorded brochure promoting cigarettes and a cycling race in The Hague

Price

€ 125,00

This is an unrecorded brochure issued by the Residentie-Renners-Club “Sparta” to promote its 70 km cycling race around The Hague. The race was organised to celebrate Queen Wilhelmina's Silver Jubilee.

According to the newspaper Het Vaderland (13 August 1923), the race occurred on Sunday, 2 September 1923. The day before, participants paraded before Queen Wilhelmina at Huis ten Bosch. Sparta even arranged free lodging to accommodate cyclists from outside the city.

The brochure lists the participants, including Dutch aviator, author, and later ‘Engelandvaarder’ A. Viruly. The advertisements are equally evocative, promoting cars, bicycles, and cigarettes—the indispensable companions of the early 20th-century cyclist.

This brochure is a fragile yet fascinating survival of ephemeral sports printing. It is of strong interest to collectors of Dutch cycling history, sports ephemera, and the cultural history of The Hague.
