Report of French lifesaving service, with image of Ward's cork lifejacket
€ 110,00
A report of the general assembly of the Société centrale de sauvetage des naufragés, today known as Société nationale de sauvetage en mer, a national life-saving service.
The SCSN was established in 1865. Its establishment was prompted by the dramatic loss of the Amphitrite in 1833, and the Sémillante in 1855. Both ships wrecked with heavy loss of life.
The last two pages of the brochure describe and show Captain Ward's famous cork lifejacket, invented in 1854, and recommended by the SCSN for "des marins, des pêcheurs et de toutes personnes s'embarquant pour un voyage sur mer".
