A lovely illustrated socialist broadside calling for a revolution

Price

€ 550,00

A rare broadside satirizing the socialists of the Weimar Republic, featuring eight illustrations with corresponding verses.

In heaven August Bebel (1840-1913), one of the founders of the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Germany (SDAP), reads the socialist newspaper Vorwärts and is appalled by its contents.

He descends to earth and journeys across Germany, encountering incarcerated socialists and ex-socialists occupying influential political positions, serving capitalism. At the end, just before he ascends back to heaven, he calls for a revolution: "Auf, lasst uns den schmutzigen Kröten auf die flachen Köpfe treten" (literally: "Come on, let’s step on the flat heads of those dirty toads").

WorldCat lists a few copies only. Apparently there were two other broadsides published in the same series.

Title

Der rote Bilderbogen Nr. 2. Bebels Besuch in der freiesten Republik der Welt.

Berlin, Vereinigung Internationaler Verlags-Anstalten, [1924].

Physical Description

Illustrated broadside (45,8 x 31,2 cm). Some faint creases, a horizontal fold, few small tears, but overall very well-preserved.
