A rare diatribe against brothels and moral decay by German author and economist Friedrich Gottlob Leonhardi (1757-1814).

As the title suggests, the author isn't a big fan of  brothels (or indeed of sex in general). He goes to great lengths to convince the reader that brothels lead to moral breakdown, a myriad of illegitimate children, and a general decline of health and life expectancy. Leonhardi, moreover, warns that too many ejaculations (more than twice a week, that is!), can result in "Wahnsinn", "Raserey", "Blödsin" or even in murder and manslaughter.

"Die Hurerey ist das Grab der guten Sitten, der Zucht und Ehrbarkeit, der besten Kräfte und einer zahlreichen Nachkommenschaft, welche dem Staate entzogen wird", as Leonhardi aptly summarizes his essay. The title suggests that the essay was part of a larger work on statecraft that the author had planned; it is unclear whether that was actually published.
