Detailed German manual on taxidermy, 1799

Georg Pistorius [pseudonym of Georg Bekker]. Anleitung zum Ausstopfen und Aufbewahren der Vögel und Säugethiere. Darmstadt, in der Heyerischen Buchhandlung, 1799. 8vo (19 x 12 cm). XXXII, 174 pp. In original plain wrappers. Untrimmed, leaving deckles and point holes intact. Some soiling, paper browned, slightly dog-eared, wrappers stained and damaged.

First and only edition of a rare and remarkably detailed manual on taxidermy.

In his preface the author mentions two previous German publications on the subject, both of which hardly cover the preservation of mammals, focussing instead only on birds. Moreover, the author stresses that his manual makes for easy reading, containing straightforward instructions to learn how to preserve and mount mammals and birds.

Bekker also collaborated on Teutsche Ornithologie oder Naturgeschichte aller Vögel Teutschlands (1800-1811).
