A 1771 travel guide for tourists visiting Gouda's Sint Janskerk
Uitlegginge van de wyd-beroemde en vermaarde glazen, binnen de [...] St. Jans kerk te Gouda. Gouda, Johannes van der Klos, 1771. 8vo. pp. Stab-stitched. Fair copy. Title-page and last leaf stained, a few leaves dog-eared, otherwise in good condition.
Rare edition of one of the earliest Dutch travel guides.
First published in 1681, it remained in print for some 200 years and the small format allowed tourists to carry it about with ease. It describes the famous 16th-century stained glass windows, created by the brothers Crabeth, of Gouda's gothic Sint Janskerk. The windows miraculously survived the 'Beeldenstorm' during the Protestant Reformation, and are the main reason that the church has been placed on the UNESCO list of monuments.
